Hey all! In this video, I show you how to set up A/B split testing in Unbounce for your pages. This is an absolutely essential component of running any campaign as you always need to be improving and seeing what works and what doesn’t.
One important thing I would like to point out is that you can’t split test too many element changes at the same time on one page – in other words, don’t test a change in headline, video, image, CTA button, etc… on the same page… if that page performs better or worse, you won’t know the reason for the success/failure.
If you want to test multiple elements at once, I would recommend either taking your time and testing one element change for a few days, then another, and so on, or just creating multiple split test variations at once (would require more traffic to get accurate results) and then make the changes for each specific variation.
That being said, let’s get into actually split testing in Unbounce.
Adding a variation is very simple – simply click on the “Add Variation” button beneath your current landing page. As far as I know, you can add as many variations as you want since I added 6 and could still keep going.. but keep in mind that the more you add, the more traffic you will need to get reliable results, so don’t overextend.
You will have the option to make a duplicate of your existing landing page, start completely from scratch, or use an existing template. Most likely however you will choose to duplicate your existing page since you will only be making a few changes on each variation to split test.
Once you create that variation, you need to click on the number in the “weight” column to adjust the percentage that this variation will get clicked on in comparison with the other.
So if you want a 50-50 split when clicking on the main URL, you would enter “50%-50%” for the weight.
When you are done with that, just click on “Publish” and you’re done! The split test would officially begin.
Keep in mind that if you want to test this yourself, you can’t just enter the URL into a browser and keep refreshing it – the cookies will be saved to your computer and so you will actually see the same variation every time this way.
If you want to see a different variation every time, you need to open the URL in different browsers – even using your current browser in incognito mode would count.
There are also 2 different modes Unbounce offers you when creating the split test variations – the “Standard” mode and the “A/B” test mode.
The “Standard” mode in Unbounce is the default mode whereby there is no split test essentially and all traffic is redirected to a single page. So if you think you determined your winner already or just want to make changes to your split test variations and aren’t ready to publish yet – you can send all traffic to the one page you think is ready and “deactivate” the other split test variations automatically.
Once a page is deactivated, it’s not deleted, but you can click on the little 3 dots to the right of that variation and click on “add to split test” to “activate” it again.
If you instead want to permanently delete that variation, you can just click on “Delete” in the deactivated list, and the variation will be permanently removed.
For any given variation, you can also create an entire new Unbounce page with that variation as the default, or you can add the variation to an existing page.
Once you create the split test variations and publish the results, you will see the confidence interval (make sure it’s over 95%, meaning the results are 95% confident that one is better than another), and of course make sure you set up conversion tracking so you can see which variation performs better.
You will see a little % number next to the conversions indicating how well the variation is performing against the champion, whether it’s 100% worse than the control (0 conversions) to up to 100% better.
