I was invited to talk about my experience as an online marketer, and elaborate on the strategies I use to make money through affiliate marketing, Google ads and Bing ads. Before we delve into the strategies discussed, I thought I’d first touch upon the basics.
Welcome to the Intriguing World of an Affiliate Marketer!
To put it simply, this is an intermediary marketing technique where brands are connected to their customers through a middleman (affiliate). The affiliate receives a commission for each visitor that buys from the business through a trackable link.
The whole concept is based on revenue sharing. If you want to sell a product, you can provide an affiliate marketer an incentive to do just that. On the flip side, if you don’t have a product to sell, but wonder how to make money online, you can earn a none-too-shabby income by joining an affiliate program.
How do you become an affiliate marketer? There is no quick and easy way to do this. A basic blueprint to get to your goal is to;
- Research the different approaches of affiliate marketing just like you’re doing right now!
- Choose only quality products and services; don’t promote items that have no value in your eyes.
- Research different programs to understand how and when you’ll be paid.
- Focus on obtaining a recurring stream of revenue; steady income is essential so that you can predict how much you will earn from one month to the next.
- Familiarize yourself with seasonal and current trends; always stay ahead of the curve.
How much can you make as an affiliate marketer? Just as with any other work-at-home venture, affiliate marketing reaps generous rewards for some and nothing at all for others – it all depends on how you approach it. Below, I’ve summarized earnings based on experience level.

#1 Start Creating Your Brand Right Now
Whether that is a website, blog or YouTube channel, you have to start channeling your efforts into building a strong web presence. Pace yourself. Before you further research affiliate marketing, pay-per-click methods or Facebook ads, it’s important to create your own brand as this is the most time-consuming step.
What do I mean by that? Well, when creating a web property, you have to think about SEO – unlike creating a successful Google ad campaign which you can sit down and do right now – SEO takes time.
Optimizing your website includes generating quality content over time, during which you will establish a loyal following for your brand. Personally, for me, I spent about 2½ years building my website and YouTube channel so that these web properties generate value and start ranking organically on search engines.
In the video, Ian stresses quality over quantity – research your topic of interest and make sure you include keywords that people are looking up. Use those keywords in video thumbnails, titles and even as you speak – YouTube also takes keywords that appear in YouTube video captions into consideration.
#2 Find the One Thing You’re Good At – And Go All Out!
For example; what is your preferred traffic source; Google ads, Bing ads, Facebook ads or Native ads? Find one and stick to it. Remember traffic is the golden ticket for most online businesses. That’s where the money is, and figuring out what drives your traffic puts you further ahead than most.
When I started out, I knew next to nothing about online marketing and tried leveraging a variety of different techniques – only to have my efforts be in vain.
Don’t be the jack of all trades, master of none. With this conviction in mind, I put my heart and soul into mastering Google ads. Over a 2½ year journey of building a web presence, I spent my time trying to figure out where exactly I was going wrong through tremendous online research.
Eventually, I was able to reach a point where I’m now making a six-figure income from a business that’s based on Google ads in addition to my blog.
#3 Learning is Lifelong – Accept It, Embrace It
You will always be learning – always! And when you’re learning, especially in the online marketing niche, pay careful attention to the “How” rather than the “What”.
For instance, there are plenty of online marketing courses that promise to teach you how to make money online. You sign up only to realize that there’s not much value there. Rather than getting frustrated, learn from the tactics they used.
Basically, you’re attempting a bit of reverse psychology to figure out what landing pages, funnels or CTAs were effective in getting you to sign up.
In essence, you’re not focusing on “What” is contained in the course but rather, “How” they got you to sign up for it.
